Christian Education Curriculum

Kindergarten-6th Grade
Education for all of Ascension's children will occur during the 10:00am Education Hour. The children's curriculum is from The Episcopal Children's Curriculum (ECC), which emphasizes gathering, story-telling, and moving forward. Resources provide teachers thoughtful background information that enriches their spiritual journeys as they help children learn and wonder about faith. Age-appropriate activities support central themes and tap into different learning styles and interests.

7th-12th Graders
All of Ascension's teenagers will be starting an exciting program called Journey to Adulthood (J2A). This program was gifted to Ascension's teenagers through a memorial given by Helen Baker-Ledy, in memory of her grandson Travis Baker. There are three sections of the Journey to Adulthood program: Rite 13, J2A and YAC. Each section of the program lasts for two years and each two-year grouping of teens will stay together until they graduate from high school. This stability of group dynamics helps create a safe and sacred space where group members can learn to trust themselves and each other as they grow in faith.
Rite-13 For 7th & 8th Graders, the Rite-13 program is a two-year faith development curriculum focusing on basic elements of our spiritual practice: prayer, scripture and the Book of Common Prayer. Class sections are practical and seek to relate spiritual practice with everyday life and circumstances. Great emphasis is placed on strengthening relationships and the class participates in regular outings, adventures and overnights.
J2A For 9th & 10th Graders, Journey to Adulthood is a two-year curriculum following Rite-13. This two-year cycle is broken up into four units: self, society, sexuality and spirituality. Each segment examines a theological inquiry: myself as a relation to God, myself as a Christian in relation to society, my sexuality as a gift from God, and my own relationship with God. At the same time, the curriculum seeks to develop basic skills of spiritual growth such as active listening and critical thinking. At the end of this two-year program, youth are invited to embark together on a holy pilgrimage.
YAC The last phase, Young Adults in Church, encourages older youth to take on more adult responsibilities both in their church and in their community. They are challenged to become good stewards of their time, tallest and treasure. They work to identify their gifts and write their own statement of beliefs. They look back in what they have studied, learned and experienced over the last six years and use that as a basis for their own growing spirituality.
AYG

Ascension Youth Group will continue to meet on Wednesdays, but the time will change. We will now meet on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month, from 3:00-5:30pm.

This time will allow for service opportunities such as tutoring children at Headstart, reading with children at Tubman Family Alliance or volunteering with Home for Life, taking care of the animals.

On the last Sunday of each month from 12:00-2:00pm, the whole Youth Group will do a fun thing together. Some ideas could involve a movie/video, bowling, rock climbing, swimming, rollerblading/roller skating, eating, bonfires, sledding, skiing, lock-ins/sleepovers, card games, etc..the list is endless! We will come together and make lists!

So as you can see, we will be providing a sacred space for our children to question, wonder and work on their relationships with God and with each other. There is a core of adults that will be helping me pull this all together. If you have any questions, please call Mindy Boynton at (651) 439-2609 ext.13 or mindy@ae-church.org
