| Belong To The Episcopal Church of the Ascension |
We sought out well-known management consultant and expert on brands, Ginny Generic,
of Woodbury, to explain why. “Ascension puts old and new together in a way people like,”
she told us. “It's an inclusive and open-minded bunch who are willing to ask questions
about their faith in a modern context. But then these same folks go off to their very traditional,
mystical services. It's a powerful combo.” |
| She went on, “They're Christians seeking spiritual rebirth and deeper education, and hoping
to do good things in the world. That's a part of their brand, but I think more important
is the fact that all of their services, classes and events are open to anyone. Anybody can be
a member of their community without any preconditions!” |
| Some parishioners do choose to “join” the church in a more formal way, however. Below are
the categories of official membership at Ascension. |
| “Baptized Members of the Church” are individuals who have been baptized in any
Christian tradition, who attend worship services regularly, and who ask the clergy to
become a member. Baptized Members of the Church, if at least 16 years old, have the
right to vote at our annual meeting. |
| “Sustaining Members of the Church” are individuals who, in addition to the above, make
an annual pledge of financial support, of any amount, to the church. |
| Sustaining Members of the Church are eligible for election to serve on the Vestry and/or
as an officer of the church (in addition to having the right to vote at the annual meeting)
and they’re allowed free use of church facilities for services or other events approved by
the Rector, such as weddings and funerals. |
| “Confirmed Members of the Church” are individuals who express, in a rite performed in
front of the church community by the Bishop, a mature commitment to the teachings of
Christ. Confirmation, at any age, requires that the individual be baptized, receive appropriate
education, agree to live a “rule of life” (ask a member of the clergy), and be a
Sustaining Member. |
